CAF to supply 54 new trains for the Docklands Light Railway James Billington, 22 February 202423 October 2024 Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF (short for Construcciones y Auxilliar de Ferrocarriles) have been contracted out by Transport for London to supply 54 new trains which will replace the oldest fleet of trains in the Docklands. The order was originally for 33 trains, the same number of trains as the ones they will replace but a further 11 have been funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communties. The new trains have been said to increase the network’s capacity by over 60% and have air conditioning and are walk-through. Another feauture of the new trains is three multi-use areas for luggage, bicycles and buggies as well as three dedicated wheelchair spaces and charging points for mobile devices. The trains are expected to start passenger service in Spring 2024 and the whole 54-train fleet will be in service by 2026. As of now, the trains that have been delivered so far are in storage at the DLR’s Beckton depot where they are being tested and adapted to the DLR’s unique communications and power systems. The section of the Docklands Light Railway from Canning Town to Becton will be closed for new train preparation over the coming weekend 24/25 February. CAF are also supplying LNER new trains.
